Back to Spring and Winter Break Trips
     Spring Break 2004
Destination: Las Varas, Mexico
2004's international trip to Las Varas, Mexico was a success for the participants, planners, and the Las Varas Habitat for Humanity affiliate. During our ten-day stay, the volunteers focused on two projects: approximately half of the students worked on the roof of one house and others helped with laying the foundation and sewer and water lines for another house. Throughout the process, the students became close with the families who would be living in the houses. Participants included long-time Habitat volunteers as well as newcomers, allowing for students new to the organization to learn more about Habitat for Humanity and housing issues in general. In addition to building, the students also participated in cultural excursions and attended lectures on the political and economic climate of the region. These events gave them a well-rounded picture of the work that needs to be done in Las Varas and Mexico in general and helped them understand the impact of their contributions. By participating in this trip, the volunteers were able to assist not only the families for whom the houses are intended but also the community as a whole. A member of the Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Las Varas told us that the presence of the volunteers helped rejuvenate their building efforts and that their assistance offered them much inspiration. The sense of inspiration was mutual. The volunteers left Las Varas with both a feeling of satisfaction and a desire to continue building. The many hours of planning and preparation paid off and the work placement, transportation, and meal preparation went smoothly. The international trip is a testament to the mission of our chapter; the students made a lasting impact on a community while learning about global housing issues, working as a team, and interacting with people of another culture.
